Job Type: ALT

There are five ALT Job-Types in Fukuoka to which you can be allocated: Prefectural SHS, Prefectural JHS, Municipal, Designated City (Kitakyushu City), or Private School.

BOE = Board of Education

Prefectural Senior High School (SHS) ALT:

  • Work at a prefectural senior high school termed your “Base School”.
  • May be asked to work at one or more other prefectural senior high schools called “Visit Schools” on a weekly or monthly basis.
  • Duties may include team teaching regular English lessons, creating lesson plans and materials, acting as adviser for student English Clubs, marking and correcting student homework, essays, and exams, coaching students for interviews and debate or speech contests, and more.
  • Your JET Programme representative at the Board of Education is the Prefectural Senior High School Prefectural Advisor (SHS PA).

Prefectural Junior High School (JHS) ALT:

  • Work with 1-2 ALTs in one of six Compulsory BOE Regional Offices in various areas of the Prefecture.
  • Should expect to visit more than one school and may teach at both elementary and junior high school.
  • Assist with conducting City or District speech contests, preparatory international travel presentations for students, and teacher training seminars.
  • May be required to travel to Regional Office and/or dispatch schools.
  • Your JET Programme representative at the Board of Education is the Prefectural Junior High School Prefectural Advisor (JHS PA).

Municipal ALT:

  • Work with 1-2 ALTs in a Municipal BOE Office.
  • Visit elementary schools and junior high schools within their assigned municipality.
  • May be asked to conduct summer classes for students in elementary schools, local English lessons with community members, etc.
  • Your JET Programme representative at the Prefectural Board of Education is the CIR, Municipal, and Private School Prefectural Advisor (CIR, Muni, and PSPD PA).

Kitakyushu City ALT:

  • Work with approx. 13 ALTs in the Kitakyushu Board of Education office.
  • Visit 1-2 schools (either elementary, junior high, or senior) regularly.
  • Visit a special needs school occasionally.
  • Assist in the planning and execution of the city’s English education events (speech contest, etc.).
  • Assist in teacher training events for Japanese Teachers of English.
  • Your JET Programme representative at the Kitakyushu Board of Education is the Kitakyushu Board of Education Prefectural Advisor.

Private School, Private Division (PSPD) ALT:

  • Work at a private school in Fukuoka Prefecture.
  • Teach at the junior high school level, senior high school level, or a combination of the two.
  • Will team-teach alongside a Japanese Teacher of English (JTE) and will likely conduct English club activities at their school.
  • May be asked to help with creating opportunities for students to interact with students in an international Japanese-language program.
  • Your JET Programme representative at the Prefectural Board of Education is the CIR, Municipal, and Private School Prefectural Advisor (CIR, Muni, and PSPD PA).
